Celebrating the Diversity of Latin Music

Partnering with Grand Performances, De Los presented a night of live Latin music that showcased the genre's diverse subgenres. The event, hosted by KCRW DJ Wyldeflower, featured a lineup that ranged from the reggae-infused sounds of Pan Dulce to Arocena's foray into Latin pop.Wyldeflower kicked off the evening with a mix of classic Cubano anthems, setting the tone for a night of musical exploration. As the tracks played, the audience members rose from their picnic blankets and joined the informal dance floor, swaying to the rhythms and sharing in the communal experience.

Grand Performances: Amplifying Global and Local Talent

Since 1987, Grand Performances has been a beacon for free outdoor performances, providing a platform for both global and local acts. The organization's commitment to representing the diversity of Los Angeles, which is over 50% Latino, is evident in its programming, which features a wide range of Latin music genres, from cumbia and salsa to mariachi."To me, that means presenting Latin music like cumbia, salsa and mariachi, all of which we're doing this year, but also presenting Latinos that are performing all different types of music," said Canyon Cody, Grand Performances' marketing and communications director. For attendee John Moody, 56, Grand Performances' concerts are a highlight of the year. "The music is always good, and if it's something I don't know, then its something I learn and expose myself to," he said. "I'm glad the city puts money into events like this. It's what makes the city worth living in."

Daymé Arocena: A Captivating Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

As the evening progressed, the spotlight turned to Daymé Arocena, the Cuban headliner whose musical journey has been marked by a blend of classical training, jazz exploration, and a deep connection to her Afro-Cuban roots.Arocena's performance was a captivating display of her powerful vocals and commanding stage presence. Clad in a sparkling skirt, the singer took the stage and immediately captivated the audience, her voice echoing down to the street below."It's usually a religious experience with her. I always say she is Orisha equals Aretha [Franklin]," said Erica Sewell, a longtime Arocena fan. "She has the vibrato of a gospel church lady, but she always reminds me of a Yoruba priestess."Throughout her set, Arocena engaged the crowd, urging them to match her energy. By the end of the performance, the entire audience was on their feet, dancing and swaying to the infectious rhythms of her music.Arocena's newest album, "Alkemi," showcases her ability to bring the Black perspective to Latin pop, blending her classical training, jazz influences, and Afro-Cuban heritage into a unique and captivating sound. Her performance at Grand Performances was a testament to her artistry and the power of Latin music to transcend boundaries and unite diverse audiences.
