When Talisman was founded in 1990, its original purpose was to tell stories about the Apartheid struggle in South Africa. Over the years, the ensemble's focus has expanded, as Green notes, "to other places in the world where there are similar struggles happening or where similar triumphs have been achieved." This evolution reflects the group's commitment to amplifying the voices of communities whose stories have been "untold or undertold."

Immersive Cultural Exchanges: Talisman's Transformative Travels

Connecting with the First Nations of Australia

One of Talisman's most recent and impactful trips was to Sydney, Australia, during the spring break of 2024. While there, the group spent a significant amount of time immersed in the culture and traditions of the First Nations indigenous community. Alvarez recounts the profound experience of singing for the First Nations people, who were deeply moved by the group's performance in languages they rarely hear. The group also learned about welcoming and purifying rituals, further enriching their understanding of the community's heritage.

Respecting Cultural Boundaries and Traditions
