Poplarville, Gautier Heading to 2024 MHSAA State Champs Games
In the heart of Biloxi, Mississippi, the high school football season is reaching its thrilling climax. Two teams, the Poplarville Hornets and the Gautier Gators, are on the cusp of achieving the ultimate dream - winning a state title. Let's delve into their journeys and what lies ahead.

"Two Teams, One Goal: State Championship Fever"

Poplarville's Battle for Redemption

The Poplarville Hornets have a storied history. From 2018 to 2020, they found themselves in three consecutive state title games after winning South State for three years straight. However, they faced heartbreak with three losses, two at the hands of the Louisville Wildcats. Now, they have a chance to rewrite history. Their recent 3-point victory over Forest and Louisville's blowout win over West Lauderdale have set the stage for an epic showdown. This season, they have shown remarkable resilience, going 6-1 in games decided by 3 points or less, with three of those wins coming in the playoffs. A win for Poplarville would be a momentous achievement, granting them their first-ever state championship since the program was established in 1911.The Hornets' opponents, the Louisville Wildcats, haven't seen many close games but have emerged victorious when it mattered. They triumphed over 7A Starkville (42-41) and 5A West Point (15-14), and in the postseason, they have yet to allow more than 7 points to an opponent. This makes their upcoming clash with Poplarville even more intense.

Gautier's Quest for a First

As the saying goes, some things in life are certain - death, taxes, and the Gautier Gators winning at home. Their home game win streak now stands at an astonishing 21 games after their 37-35 win against Brookhaven in the 5A State Championship. Their last loss at Vaughn-Wallace Stadium was in 2021 to a Picayune team that went on to win the state over West Point. The Green Wave, with their 2021 state title, have been a dominant force. That was their 6th straight state championship game appearance. After their victory against Cleveland Central in the North State and their win over Laurel in 2023, their streak has reached nine. Now, they hope to make history by winning back-to-back state championships. This will be their first-ever state championship game, and the entire community is buzzing with excitement. All state title games will take place at USM's M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg from December 5 to December 7. Fans can catch the action on WLOX Bounce 13.2.
