Start the Holiday Season with Year-End Money Moves
Taking a lead from the nation's retailers, we embark on the holiday season well before Thanksgiving. Our focus here is on helping you manage your money effectively, not just spending it. Let's explore some key year-end money strategies.

Master Your Finances with These Holiday Season Moves

Get a Jump on Taxes

The IRS's Withholding Estimator is a valuable tool. It ensures you've set aside enough funds to cover your tax bill in April. If not, notify your payroll department to increase withholding by the end of the year. For those not working or self-employed, making an estimated tax payment can prevent potential tax penalties. This proactive approach helps you stay on top of your tax obligations and avoid any last-minute financial stress.

By carefully managing your withholding or making estimated payments, you can have more control over your finances and potentially save money in the long run. It's a simple yet effective way to start the year on a financially stable footing.

Contribute More to a Pre-Tax Retirement Plan

If you have the means, boosting your contributions to a pre-tax retirement plan before December 31 is a smart move. Not only does it reduce your current tax bill, but it also sets you up for a more secure financial future. For individuals with an adjusted gross income of ,250 or less and couples with ,500 or less, a retirement contribution may qualify for the Saver's Credit, worth up to ,000 for individuals and ,000 for couples. This credit provides an additional incentive to save for retirement and can make a significant difference in your financial well-being.

By consistently contributing to your retirement plan, you are taking advantage of the power of compounding and building a nest egg for your golden years. It's a long-term strategy that pays off in the end.

Maintain Healthy Habits

If you have a Health Savings Account, topping it off before the end of the year is a great idea. The 2024 limit is ,150 per individual and ,300 per family. This allows you to take advantage of the tax benefits associated with HSAs and have additional funds available for medical expenses. For those with a flexible spending account, it's important to check if there is a balance and spend it before December 31. Otherwise, you risk losing that money. By staying on top of these accounts, you can make the most of your healthcare-related finances.

Healthy habits extend beyond just medical accounts. By being mindful of your spending and saving habits throughout the year, you can set yourself up for financial success. It's about making small, consistent changes that add up over time.

Take Your Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)

If you have contributed to a pre-tax retirement account like a 401(k), 403(b), or Traditional IRA, the government requires you to take a certain amount of money from the account after age 73. Failure to do so results in a 50 percent penalty on the amount you should have taken. However, if you correct it within two years, the penalty drops to 10-25%. If you have multiple IRAs, you only need to take one RMD based on your age and the total value of the accounts. It's crucial to understand these rules and ensure you are meeting your RMD obligations.

One way to sidestep an RMD is through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). Anyone 70½ or older with an IRA can make a direct transfer of up to 5,000 (0,000 if married) to eligible charities. This transfer is not included in your taxable income and can satisfy your RMD. It's a win-win situation that allows you to give back to society while also managing your retirement finances.

Rebalance Your Investment Accounts

With significant gains this year, many are wondering if they should sell stocks "before the next drop occurs." Market timing is a risky game, but now is an ideal time to rebalance your investment accounts. Let's say you started the year with 60% of your 401(k) in stocks and 40% in bonds. Due to the stock market's rise, this balance may be out of whack, perhaps now at 70-30. By selling 10% of your stock position and redirecting it into bonds, you can return to your target allocation.

Re-balancing your retirement account has no tax implications, but if you do it with a taxable brokerage account, you may have to pay taxes on the gain. It's important to consider these factors and make informed decisions based on your individual financial situation. By rebalancing, you are ensuring that your portfolio remains in line with your risk tolerance and time horizon.

Take Advantage of Winners and Losers

If you have a taxable investment account, selling losing positions and using those losses against sales of winning positions can be a tax-efficient strategy. If you have more losses than gains, you can deduct up to ,000 of losses against ordinary income. If the losses exceed ,000, you can carry over the excess to future years. This allows you to minimize your tax liability and potentially increase your after-tax returns.

By carefully managing your gains and losses, you can optimize your investment portfolio and make the most of your tax savings. It's a strategy that requires careful planning and execution but can pay off in the long run.
